NAC-GOT TO MOVE IS BACK!

Got to Move (GTM), an initiative by the National Arts Council (NAC), is the nationwide dance movement that celebrates the diversity of dance in Singapore. Got to Move aims to ignite Singaporeans’ interest in dance and to deepen their appreciation of the art form. This national platform brings together Singapore’s dance professionals and enthusiasts to showcase their talents and works to a diverse audience.SX8A2798

The fifth edition of the GTM anchor festival runs from 4-27 October 2019. The month long festival has something for everyone including the GTM Dance-Walk, interactive performances, family-friendly dance activities and programmes that bring the joy of dance to everyone.

Maya Dance Theatre is proud be a part of NAC-GTM 2019. This year we present our latest programme, Shadow dancing under the illumination of street lights, part of GTM 2019.

Shadow dancing under the illumination of street lights provides audiences and participants a better understanding of dance and how it is used as a medium for change and also to address social issues.

Featuring a series of performance, workshop, dialogue session and interactive workshop, the programme aims to bring about the awareness and means of how the arts can use be a catalyst for address social issues in our society

 

1. Dance from the soul … to heal the broken body

This lecture demo/ dialogue session presented by Kavitha Krishnan (Artistic Director, Maya Dance Theatre) and Liz Lea (Formerly artistic director of Canberra Dance and ACT ’City News’ Artist of the Year for 2017) will highlight the use of the arts (dance) as a medium to bring awareness about social issues in today's society. From their works, RED by Liz Lea and Flowers Don't Bloom All the Time and Puffing Bodies by Kavitha with Maya, both the artmakers will bring forth the value of social messaging through Dance.The session will also feature a short film on disability and the arts from Australia.

2. Let dance be my guiding light in this hour of darkness

Maya Dance Theatre will present an interactive dance workshop for residents of Yong-en Care Centre. Presented by several dance instrucors from Maya Dance Theatre and partners, Let dance be my guiding light in this hour of darkness, will interact with participants with the aim of engage them in dance while at the same time provide them an avenue to express themselves in movement.

3. Dancing with myself so no one can watch me cry

Maya Dance Theatre will be working with residents from Pertapis Women and Girls’ Centre, to use dance as a means of identifying social issues. Through a dance performance presentation and subsequent workshop, we will be providing residents of Pertapis Women and Girls’ Centre the technique and know-how of creating works which address social issues for their future projects.
