What is MOVE?
[MOVE] is a mentorship and training program organised by Maya Dance Theatre, and taught by professional dancers and choreographers. [MOVE] had its pilot program in 2015, [MOVE] 2016 is the second season.
What’s the difference between a dancer and a dance-maker?
A dancer will audition into the program, and will be placed into pieces to work with dance-makers.
Dance-makers will apply through a written and video proposal, and will work with dancers from the program. You will be paired with a mentor who will meet with you and observe some of your rehearsals to give you feedback on your choreography and your process.
Applicants may apply for both roles. However, we strongly suggest that if you successfully apply as a dance-maker, you do not participate as a dancer.
What should the dance-maker prepare in the proposal?
You should write a short description of your past experience, with video links to past work if any. You should also write a proposal for what you wish to create through this program, to give us an idea of what you might create. This proposal should include a video of 1-3 minutes, showing some of the raw ideas that you have. These ideas could be movement-based, theatre-based, visual designs, or all of the above.
What is the commitment required?
All who successfully apply, whether as dancers or dance-makers, must attend 80% of all classes and talks scheduled. In cases of emergency or on compassionate grounds, we will allow attendance to be capped at 70%. Your attendance is required in order for learning to take place.
Classes, talks, and sharing sessions are held on Tuesday evenings between 730-930pm, extending to 1030pm on occasion. The exception is in June, where there will only be a one-week evening intensive from 6-10 June, and no other Tuesday nights as you may wish to travel, take a break, or be busy with other programs in this period.

Who are the teachers and mentors?
All teachers and mentors would have at least 5 years of professional experience in the contemporary dance world, as artists and educators. Some of these people would be independent artists, and some would be working in companies including Maya Dance Theatre.
I don’t think I’m good enough. What should I do?
