PANCHA-When the flames

FIRE

PANCHA-When the flames blaze the caged body, I surrender my soul, I Am… (2017)

June 2017 (Emily Hill, Singapore)

In When the flames blazes the caged body, I surrender my soul, I Am … Maya Dance Theatre explored the lives of two women who are not only inspirational in their own way but served as a epitome of womanhood.

Unfortunately, the lives of these women were cut short due to social, religious and at times; political intervention.

Two women, two eras, one simmering test of fire

Joan of Arc, the revered French saint and Sita, a respected symbol of purity from the epic Ramayana; faced betrayal by men in power despite proving their allegiance.

By exploring Joan and Sita, we introduce a dialogue between worlds and cultural contexts. Their parallel fates are tied to the multi-faceted symbolism of fire.

Centuries have gone by but has the fire truly ceased? Are they still trapped in the flames?

Can it destroy their spirits, or has it ignited their souls?
