Mandala
The mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol representing the universe. It is any pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
Simultaneously simple and complex, the structures of the cosmos are at once ephemeral, eternal and infinite. Spiralling in and out of infinity, this endless fluidity imbues a permanent impermanence, revealing that motion, change, growth, and decay are the most basic characteristics of reality. In this way the mandala reflects how intimately related to the universe we really are.
Created as part of choreographer Rachel’s Asialink Residency (Australia), Mandala also represents the meeting point between her own choreographic practice and interests, together with the unique expression of Maya Dance Theatre with artistic director/resident choreographer, Kavitha Krishnan.
Mandala was recently presented in MDT’s Annual Production, RELEASE 6.0 in Singapore (2017).
